Chapter 14

Cory

My heart was racing almost as fast as my truck as I sped through the light traffic. I had no idea what was happening, but when the emotions coming through our bond went suddenly from giddy to terror, I dropped my tools and took off.

Ordering my phone to call Bray, I slammed my fist into the steering wheel when it rang through to voicemail. My next call was to Gary, and when he answered, I all but yelled, “Where’s Bray?”

“What the hell, Cory?” He snapped back.

“Something’s wrong, he’s terrified. Where is he?” I managed, only slightly calmer.

“Shit!” He blurted. “He left right after lunch. Head home, I’ll leave now and check the roads between here and there.”

The line went dead, but that was fine, all my focus was on getting home as fast as I could. I knew I was going in the right direction as the pull on our bond caused by our physical separation eased. I skidded into the yard and quickly registered that his car was there, but the front door was open and a bag was spilled at the threshold.

Jumping out of the truck, I was slammed with the scent of madness and fear. Following my nose, I ran into the forest, the coppery smell of blood starting to drown out the other scents and leading the way. I wanted to scream, adrenaline pumping through my system as I got closer to the unknown.

I stopped in my tracks at the sight of a body, covered in blood and crumpled on the ground. It was too big to be Bray, so I ran wide around it as I continued the search for my mate.

Looking and sniffing led me a short distance away to a tree with claw marks on its trunk. I quickly shucked my clothes and shifted, climbing the tree to find my mate huddled in its leaves. He was shaking and I could see blood splattered in his fur, his front paws and muzzle coated in it.

‘Bray, baby? Are you hurt?’ I asked as I sniffed at his neck. Having found him, I was finally able to focus and could smell that none of the blood was his, but he didn’t answer me, and that was concerning.

He didn’t react to me at all, and the only thing I could think was that he was in shock. So, I found a spot to lay next to him and started cleaning his fur.

The taste was rancid, the blood tainted by the rage that must have consumed the man on the forest floor, but that didn’t matter. My mate needed to be clean, so I continued to lick it away, all the while letting him know that he was okay, safe, and so very brave.

Once he was clean, I just snuggled in close and waited. Not long after, his ears perked up and he started to softly growl. Shifting my attention outward, I heard something large heading our way.

Two bears ran into sight and looked around until they spotted us.
